Jack Kirby Meets the X-Files
SECTION ZERO isn’t a secret section of the United Nation’s charter. It does not perpetually fund a team of experts and explorers to travel the world investigating the strange, fantastic, and unknown. The idea that this “team” looks into things such as UFOs, Monsters, Lost Civilizations, Time Travel, Ancient Gods and still-living Dinosaurs is no more than an urban legend.
After all, none of these things exist.
SECTION ZERO is a fast-moving adventure comic combining the kinetic energy of Jack Kirby with the world of myth, folklore and urban legends. There’s danger around every corner as Our Heroes challenge the unknown and face the fantastic for yet another time. It’s also a story about love — what we’ll do for it, and how far we’ll go to get it back. But with monsters!
SECTION ZERO was co-created by Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett in 2000 following their successful, fun-fulled runs on DC’s Superboy. It was part of the Gorilla Comics imprint from Image Comics, which also included Busiek and Immonen’s Shockrockets, Waid and Kitson’s Empire, Perez’s Crimson Plague, and Dezago and Wieringo’s Tellos. It was heady company and exciting times, and SECTION ZERO was a great title that the creators poured their hearts and souls into.
But after finishing only three issues, personal matters meant Kesel had to step away from the comic, and the book’s tag-line — There Is No Section Zero — became ominously prophetic. But they never fully abandoned their labor of love, and worked hard to bring the book back.
The result of that hard work is a six-Issue miniseries featuring the original three issues of SECTION ZERO and three all-new issues completing the storyline. The first issue premieres in April 2019. Here’s a breakdown of all six issues:
Part One: “GROUND ZERO”: A team of fearless adventurers uncovers the secrets behind UFOs, MONSTERS, and LOST CIVILIZATIONS! It’s “JACK-KIRBY-does-The-X-Files” in this high-octane miniseries.
Part Two: “SOME THINGS SHOULD STAY BURIED”: SECTION ZERO goes to the Australian Outback, where the team makes a startling discovery-and suffers a huge loss!
Part Three: “SACRIFICES MUST BE MADE”: There’s a secret, savage world far below the streets of New York-and Section Zero must survive it in order to find their missing leader.
Part Four: Classified
Part Five: Classified
Part Six: Classified
KARL KESEL loves his job far more than he has any right to. He has written, inked, and occasionally penciled: Superman, Superboy, Harley Quinn, Spider-Man, Suicide Squad, Fantastic Four, Captain America and many others — although he has an inexplicable fondness for obscure characters no one else remembers. He lives in Portland, Oregon.
TOM GRUMMETT has drawn a lotta comics over the years, and is amazed that he continues to do so. He’s drawn the adventures of Superman, the Hulk, Robin, Thor, the Teen Titans, the Fantastic Four, Superboy, Iron Man, and a bunch of other characters he’s too lazy to list. He lives in the wilds of Canada, where he battles mosquitoes in the summer, and wendigo all winter.
